Worldwide distribution is found in tropics, subtropics, warm temperature regions.

Erythrocytic cycle is 48 hours (fevers often not periodic in early infections). Will normally find 12-24 merozoites/schizonts in RBC and 10,000 in EE form. And gametocytes are round or ovoid.

P. Vivax often forms rings as trophs, very "lively" (reason for being called vivax). Host RBCs become enlarged and stippled with "Schufner's dots".

Prefers reticulocytes (immature RBCs).

Relapses occur soon after initial infection or much later.
